For thousands of years coca has been part of daily life in the Andes: chewed during long days in the highlands, brewed as mate de coca, and shared at gatherings. It is one of the most studied plants of the region.
What's in the leaf.
In 1975, a Harvard Botanical Museum analysis led by USDA botanist James Duke measured the nutrients in dried coca leaf and found calcium, iron, phosphorus, vitamin A and riboflavin (vitamin B2), at higher levels than the average of the 50 Latin American plant foods it was compared with.
